New Expanded SCAMPY Program
October 27, 2022
By: Lou Ronca
New and different educational opportunities will be available with the SCAMPY program. SCAMPY has focused on building new plywood outboard boats with local youth…which has been quite successful over the last thirteen years. Now SCAMPY will expand their program to include complete restorations of mahogany powerboats.
Two mahogany boats in need of restoration have been acquired and will be used to teach anyone interested in the following:
Replacement 5200 Bottoms
Frame Replacement
Plank Replacement
Proper Strip, Stain, and Re-Varnishing
Wiring & Plumb
Engine Installation
Necessary Mechanicals
Final Assembly & Test
The two boats are a 17’ Century Resorter and a 17’ Chris-Craft Deluxe Runabout. The two mentors for these projects are professional restorers Barry West and Jeff Funk. Barry will take on the Deluxe, and Jeff the Resorter. Both mentors have years of restoration experience and dozens of successful restorations under their belt.

Thanks to SCAMPY and its new mentors, two more classics will be saved for future generations. Come join the fun if you have interest!
Jeff Funk is scheduled to hold classes on the Century Resorter project on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at the SCAMPY shop located at 31129 Industrial Dr., Travares.
