Stauter Rowboat with 1928 Elto High Speed Quad Engine
The rowboat was made by Stauter Boats in Mobile Alabama. Built in 1995 by Gene Lami and Johnny. The boat is one of the last boats built and Gene put a lot of TLC into it; like ribbon sides and beautiful mahogany seats and we used the West System throughout to stop checking. The boat is not flat bottomed but has a small “vee” so that it rides better in rough water but is still fast like a flat bottom boat. The boat is 13′-8″ and I made a custom jack plate so that I can run various tiller engines. The boat has been re varnished inside which took over 100 hours of sanding and 5 coats of Epifanes.
The engine is a 1928 Elto High Speed Quad and was the first 4 cylinder outboard engine manufactured in America. It is 18 horsepower and the high speed version has aluminum pistons and connecting rods that uses an 8:1 gas oil ratio. The engine is restored with new plating, rings and ignition system.
